The following case is extracted from “The Art of Applying Comprehensive Metaphysics” Grand Dharma Function in Malaysia on 28 August 2011. Master Lu performed Totem Enquiries live on stage and answered questions from the audience to help them overcome difficulties in their health, career, and everyday issues.
When a person is asking Master Lu to perform Totem Enquiry, if a living person is being enquired, then the year of birth and the Chinese zodiac sign of that person should be stated. If a deceased person is being enquired, then the full name of the deceased and the exact written characters of the name should be stated.

Enquirer: Hi, Master Lu. I was born in 1981, year of the Rooster. I would like to ask about my career and my marriage.
Master Lu: 1981, year of the Rooster. Let me tell you, your career… Your career fortune is always like this: in the beginning everything is good, but later on somehow it always turns out to be not so good. Is that right?
Enquirer: Yes, that’s right.
Master Lu: If it’s correct, you should answer loudly. Cantonese is also okay. Like, “Hello”, “Okay”. Alright, let me tell you, your relationship fortune is not good. Do you understand?
Enquirer: How come it’s not good?
Master Lu: How come it’s not good? Your previous life. Despite the fact that you’re a young lady right now, you seem to be pretty… In your previous life, you were a man. Your personality was very stubborn. Do you understand? You committed many wrongdoings. Therefore in your present life, you were destined to have a nice appearance. Because only when you have a nice appearance, people will be attracted to you. Do you understand? So that people can collect their karmic debts from you. You were meant to be like this due to your karma. And you were meant to have your current appearance, your current fate, and experience your current karmic retributions. As a result, your relationship fortune is sometimes good, and sometimes not so good. Tell everyone if this is true.
Enquirer: Yes, it’s true. But how do I transform and resolve it?
Master Lu: She is asking how she can transform and resolve it. How to transform and resolve it? Simple. Recite the Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots (Chieh Chieh Chou). Recite more Heart Sutra (Hsin Ching) for yourself. You also need to recite the Jvala Mahaugra Dharani (Hsiao Tsai Chi Hsiang Shen Chou).
Enquirer: How many times would be suitable?
Master Lu: The Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots (Chieh Chieh Chou) should be recited 21 times per day, and Heart Sutra (Hsin Ching) should be recited 7 times per day. And then, you should recite the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance (Li Fo Ta Chan Hui Wen) once per day. Also, recite the Jvala Mahaugra Dharani (Hsiao Tsai Chi Hsiang Shen Chou) 21 times per day.
Enquirer: Regarding the Sri Devi Dharani (Ta Chi Hsiang Tien Nu Chou), how many times should I recite per day?
Master Lu: Hm. She even knows about the Sri Devi Dharani (Ta Chi Hsiang Tien Nu Chou). Recitation of the Sri Devi Dharani (Ta Chi Hsiang Tien Nu Chou) is very effective for improving relationships. You can recite it. If you feel that you can recite it fluently, you can recite it 49 times per day. Okay?
Enquirer: Regarding career…
Master Lu: Regarding your career, you should remember, in the future, you should make sure your eyes don’t misbehave. You shouldn’t look around inappropriately. For example, things that belong to your manager, you shouldn’t look at them inappropriately. Do you understand?
Enquirer: Okay.
Enquirer: Alright, I won’t say any more, I won’t say any more. Do you understand? Okay.
Enquirer: I would like to ask about my mother, born in 1955, year of the Ram. How many Little Houses should she recite for the foreign spirits that are occupying her body?
Master Lu: 1955, year of the Ram. 1955, year of the Ram, and regarding the foreign spirits on her body, right?
Enquirer: Hm, yes.
Master Lu: 1955, year of the Ram. Hm. The Totem of this Ram shows no major illness. Right now your mother is a bit overweight.
Enquirer: Yes, yes, yes.
Master Lu: Even though you‘re very slim, your mother is quite overweight and she eats a lot. Her feet… Knees. Yes, her knees, and her thighs often feel very sore. If she stands up after sitting for a long time, she would feel tired.
Enquirer: Exactly, exactly, yes.
Master Lu: Oh, there is a foreign spirit of a male occupying her body.
Enquirer: Really? Is… Is he my grandpa?
Master Lu: I don’t know, I don’t know.
Enquirer: Then, how many Little Houses are needed?
Master Lu: Is your father here?
Enquirer: My father isn’t here.
Master Lu: Alright, I will tell you then. Since your father isn’t here, I will tell you. There’s a man, and this man, since he doesn’t look very old, it’s possible that he was a boyfriend of your mother’s before she got married. It’s possible that he has passed away. You should know that, there was a man who was very close to your mother in the past. Maybe you mother even told you about him. If there is, then there is. If there isn’t, then there isn’t.
Enquirer: I don’t know.
Master Lu: If you don’t know, then never mind. You tell your mother, and she will know immediately. Okay?
Enquirer: Then, how many Little Houses are needed?
Master Lu: For this situation, you should recite 27 Little Houses for him. He’s currently sitting on your mother’s lap. He’s not very old, and his hair is partially grey. His face is a bit round. You tell your mother, and she will know. “Oh! It is actually my ex-boyfriend.” Okay?
Enquirer: Then are there any other foreign spirits occupying her body?
Master Lu: On her body? Your mother, right? Your mother is very capable. At home, she can do the washing and cooking, and all other tasks.
Enquirer: Yes.
Master Lu: Also, your mother’s family has a certain social status. In other words, the family that she was reborn into was a good family.
Enquirer: Oh, really?
Master Lu: Is that correct?
Enquirer: Yes, yes.
Master Lu: Alright, I won’t say any more.
Enquirer: Then, about the foreign spirits that are occupying my father’s body?
Master Lu: Oh, let her ask one more.
Enquirer: The foreign spirits that are occupying my father’s body.
Master Lu: Oh. No more Totem Enquiry, no more Totem Enquiry.
Enquirer: Then can I please ask about my altar at home? The altar at my place.
Master Lu: Oh, that’s fine. You can ask about your altar.
Enquirer: Has Guan Yin Bodhisattva visited my altar?
Master Lu: The altar at your place, right?
Enquirer: Yes.
Master Lu: Guan Yin Bodhisattva has visited your altar.
Enquirer: Hm. Thank you.
Master Lu: Let me tell you, Guan Yin Bodhisattva has even visited your altar last week.
Enquirer: Yes, yes.
Master Lu: How do you know?
Enquirer: Because the incense curled up as it was burning.
Master Lu: The incense curled up? You see? Let me tell you all. Yesterday when I arrived in Malaysia and checked into the hotel, at the hotel that we’re stay in, let me tell you, even Shakyamuni Buddha came. As well as Tai Sui Bodhisattva, and Guan Yin Bodhisattva, and the Bodhisattvas of Malaysia. They all came. Deepest gratitude to Guan Yin Bodhisattva! I’m in tears whenever I think about Guan Yin Bodhisattva. Guan Yin Bodhisattva loves all of you, all of the sentient beings very much. If you do not mindfully and sincerely cultivate and perform recitations, then you would not be worthy of Guan Yin Bodhisattva. You must perform recitations mindfully and sincerely. Do you all have confidence in yourself?

Master Lu: Alright. Alright, young lady, you may go.
